A Note From Fr. Michael
4 April 2019

Dear Folks:

I am feeling a bit nostalgic, remembering and feeling some important things of late.  So, please forgive me any indulgence required.  For several different strains in my life intertwine now and give me pause.

The first comes as I look at the church calendar and notice that today marks the day that Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1968.  I was finishing my high school career in the spring of 1968.  It was quite a year in my awakening.  The nation was erupting over civil rights and war.  Our politics then makes today’s polarization tame.  Riot police, National Guard, burning cities were scenes on the nightly news; but we also had voices of leadership modeling a way forward.  Martin Luther King was the prime example.  He was killed on this day 51 years ago.

Implementation of the PRB fund is moving along with financial donations and formation of the committee.  To date over $900 has been received, not including proceeds from the 40+ T-Shirts that have been ordered so far.  If you haven’t ordered one yet, you still have time.  The price is $20 and they come in white or black, sizes S, M, L, XL.  There also is a women’s cut.  If interested please contact Fran Kidder, Walker Boyd or Joe Bianca after service TODAY.
Fran Kidder and I are also looking for three parishioners to join us on the PRB committee. The main purpose of the committee is to review requests for assistance and make recommenda-tions to the Vestry for their approval.  If you are interested please let one or both of us know.  We can answer your questions and provide a copy of the Fund Policy for your review.  This is the only fund of its kind in the Diocese, so we are charting new territory.

FOR 2019?
If you are 70 ½ or older, you can make a contribution to St. Philip’s Episcopal Church directly from your Traditional IRA simply by instructing the plan administrator to make the transfer directly to St. Philip’s as a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). You are allowed to transfer up to $100,000 a year to the charities of your choice.  Your gift will be transferred directly to St. Philip’s, will not be reported as taxable income and will count toward your minimal distribution requirements for 2019.  And, most important, your generous support will help sustain St. Philip’s Ministries and bring about transformation, renewal, and positive change in our local community.  To learn more about making a donation from your IRA, call your plan administrator, tax adviser or financial planner.
On Saturday March 2nd, ten members of St. Philip’s body attended the annual Leadership Training Day sponsored by our Diocese.  This year’s topic?  Stewardship.

The Vestry of St. Philip’s has begun working on developing a Stewardship Committee, and a year round Stewardship program.  The Vestry and committee (once formed) will focus not only on our annual canvas, but also on gratitude and in celebrating on a regular basis.

Over the next few weeks Vestry members will be reaching out by phone or mail to each of our members to say hello; to thank you for your gifts; to ask how each of you are doing; to ask how we (the Vestry) are doing; to get to know each other better.  We hope to have these important conversations on a quarterly basis.

Keep your eyes and ears open to see and to hear our good news!

Please fill out the Flower & Music form in the pew, on the back table in the church or on the table in the parish hall. Return it with your donation no later than April 14th to be included in the printed list.
If you need a form sent to you please contact Laura in the office at
