Be Careful:  If you come here you will grow!

A Note From Fr. Michael
14 February 2019

Dear Folks:

Who among us does not realize that today (on the secular calendar) is “Valentine’s Day”? – a time where romantic love is celebrated.  (You can “google” this occasion to discover its murky origins and how the church tried to “reclothe” this pagan bacchanalia: hearts and flowers, indeed!)  But such heart-giving also reminds me of a word you and I employ every Sunday in our worship.  The word is “believe.”
“Belief” is related to but different than “faith.”  “Faith” means “trust” and basically and essentially is the first step in what it takes to have any kind of relationship.  “Belief” is based on “faith” but then adds another degree to the trust.  “Belief” means to “give one’s heart”.  As risky as trusting is, giving one’s heart to someone or to something risks having one’s heart broken.  So, most of us have learned to be careful about giving our hearts away, which leads me to a third aspect of relationship: Learning.
If relationships are to be meaningful and fruitful, we must trust; and in order for our trust to be real, our hearts must be in our trust.  And if we must be careful about offering our hearts, then it behooves us to be increasingly aware of what this heart-giving entails.  We need to learn about the heart-giving: To Whom are we giving our hearts?  Why is this offering important?  What is required of us in this very personal presentation?  Moreover, how might we minimize (if not avoid) being foolish (if not down-right irresponsible) about giving our hearts away?

WHO IS JASON BURNS?
I would like to thank you all for a very warm welcome at St. Philip’s. It has been a pleasure to meet you and I look forward to getting to know more of you.

I grew up in Turners Falls, MA and am a graduate of Turners Falls High School. I attended college at UMass Amherst where I received both a Bachelors in History and a Masters of Education. It is also where I met my wife Erica. We have been married for nearly 17 years and have two boys, Evan who is a freshman in high school and Liam who is in the 6th grade.
